When Chaka Khan sang these
words more than a decade ago, I never thought that they would be more than just
lyrics to me. For the past two years, my passion of roller skating has been
starved and forced to feed itself only in moderation and small portions.
I moved from Detroit, MI (A
skater’s paradise) to Chandler, AZ (A skater’s hell) for a number of reasons.
At first it didn’t bother me not being able to enjoy R & B music at an adult
session several times a week. I was new to the area, and there was so much to
do like familiarize myself with the area and get to know people. However, as the
months went by, I started to long for some Patrice Rushen cuts or the occasional
Gap Band song when I did visit the rinks here. I was soon forced to put my IPod
into overdrive and load up as much music possible and turn it up as loud as I
could to drown out the wails of children and undecipherable lyrics that were
un-skate able.
I begin to envy what I had
so easily taken for granted before and started wishing for a miracle. No longer
being able to “leave it on the wood”, now I had to “leave it on the epoxy-glide”
(The blue stuff). That doesn’t even sound right. Now, instead of checking into
a mental hospital, I travel five hours to California once a month or to the
occasional out of town skate party just to get my roll on.
Some may ask, “Is it worth
it?” Real skaters already know, “Of course it is!” But I’ll do whatever I have
to do to get my roll on.
So when your rolling
during the week get a slide, a split, a one-stop, a jack-leg or whatever you
style calls for in for me!

KP DETROIT STYLE ALL DAY
Roller Funk :When
did you form your skate club and what made you decide to form a group?
Kitty Kat Ladies :
Our group was formed in January of 2007. We all met at the
skating rink (Skate 22, Union, NJ). We all love roller skating and became
friends outside of skating and decided to form a group.
Roller Funk :
Who are the members of your group and what are your individual
strengths, i.e. is anyone a strong spinner, or does anyone have a particular
skate style?
Kitty Kat Ladies :
The group Members are Meerah, Jazz, Q, Deeyuh, Tina and Toyah.
Five of us have group names. Jazz aka Snoopy, Q aka Ms. UniQue, Deeyuh aka
Lil Mama, Tina aka Lady T and Toyah aka PlayGurl.
Individual Strengths:
Meerah - Footwork in the middle, smooth and aggressive rider, making up
routines, riding & leading a train, dips, crazy legs, spins, slides and
floor tricks on the wood. She is our very own stunt devil.
Jazz - Jazz be killn the crazy legs that is her signature move, footwork in
the middle, smooth and aggressive rider, spins, making up routines, riding &
leading a train. Jazz be dancing with her skates on.
Q - She is known for her shake, Q hears her song and just starts doing her
own lil skate shake, smooth and aggressive rider, riding and leading a
train.
Deeyuh - Very heavy on the footwork in or out the middle, we all say she has
no bones her body the way her whole body moves on her wheels, smooth and
aggressive rider, making up routines, riding & leading a train, dips, spins,
slides. Ms. Footwork indeed.
Tina - Backwards skating, aggressive rider on the fast songs, smooth and
slow with a twist on the slow ones, riding and leading a train. Skating
backwards is her thing, especially on the slow jams.
Latoya - Smooth rider, riding and leading a train.
We all skate forwards and backwards and of course we all have a lil twist in
our waste when we skate. It makes the ride much smoother...at least we think
it does.
All of us skate on different levels and our
strongest skaters are Deeyuh, Meerah and Jazz.
Roller Funk:
What are your two favorite rinks and why?
Kitty Kat Ladies :
Our favorite rink is Skate 22. Why? We all met there, so it
is like home to us.
RollerFunk : What goals do you have for
your group in the future?
Kitty Kat Ladies :
Our goal is to reach out to as many skaters as we can and
keep the love of skating alive and growing.
RollerFunk : What is your favorite song
to skate to?
Kitty Kat Ladies :
Our favorite skate jam is "Work It!" RollerFunk : What would you like to tell
other skaters around the world?
Kitty Kat Ladies :
Skating is enjoyment. If you don't know how to skate, learn it,
if you are a skater, teach and share what you know with others and most of
all....have fun. Roller skating is something we do for fun, and we have a
passion for it. We just have to roll. We do not compete in competitions, we
just get out there roll, joke, laugh and just have a good time. Outside of
skating we throw parties, we have been in fashion shows, go bowling and just
get together and have fun. We all share one common interest.....Roller
Skating. We are looking forward to connecting and meeting the entire skate
family. Lets continue to keep the love of skating united and growing and
keep on rolling!
Much Luv to the Entire Skate Family
Don't roll on our Tail!

Our Rink
I could write 2,000
paragraphs about skating. Our local rink here in Schenectady, NY is Rollerama. We've been skating there for over 30 years. My parents took my
brother and I when we were only 4 years old, with little wooden wheels on
our skates. We've skated ever since. My husband and I make great skate
partners. We skate at least twice a week. The rink floor is awesome, larger
than most floors around here. Our pet peeves.. hmmm. The biggest is the
music. We just cannot skate to hard rap or hard rock. It isn't really that I
don't like some of it, but not to skate to. Chris and I rent the rink,
literally for 2 hours at $250 a pop, after hours, just so we can make our
own play list and invite people we want. No hard rap, no rock, no bubble gum
music, no games, just 2 hours of GET YOUR SKATE ON jam music. We're dead by
the end of the night, but it's worth it. I could tell many stories, but need
more than 2 paragraphs. SKATE HARD OR GO HOME.
