7 Signs Of Reliable Web Hosting

Author: adrianadams

Either you want to set up a new web site or you have a website that is doing quite well on the Internet and so far there have been no issues, and you are happy with the way things are going. But have you ever stopped to consider how reliable your existing or potential web host is? Here are a few key questions you can ask to figure out if your web host is reliable or not:

How secure is the server on which your web site is hosted? Does it feature powerful firewalls – not the free versions that are available on the Internet – and strong anti-virus software? Or, is the server chock-a-block with worms and Trojans and hackers are regularly fingering into the server ports? Of course, you cannot figure this out on your own if you aren’t a technical person, and the best way to find this out would be to read reviews about your web host and speak to his other clients.

How powerful is the server hardware? If your website is hosted on a server backed by obsolete hardware, which is networked with an antiquated broadband connection, then you’ve had it. Remember, the computer today is converging with TV and video and the hardware has to be powerful enough not just to support huge multimedia files, but also to ensure that these multimedia files are easily downloaded by the website visitors.

What is the server uptime? Does your web host’s server work on crutches or does it hum along perfectly? If you are getting a server downtime of 5% and over because your web host keeps rebooting his beautiful system, then it’s time to get a new web host.

What’s the customer support like? Does your web host feature 24/7 customer support staff or is your host a reseller? If he’s a reseller, he will not be as dedicated as you would like him to be; or, even if he isn’t a reseller and doesn’t have 24/7 customer support, then he is not reliable.

Does your web host take backups? All reliable web hosts always back up the data on their server just in case anything goes wrong. And this is a very important feature, which users do not bother to enquire when they rent the space.

Does your server have SSL? If you’re planning to set up a shop then no customer will ever swipe his credit card on your site unless your website has a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). Ensure that your web host provides you with this feature before you sign up with him.

Is the host server easy to use? Once you upload your website, you will need to change it frequently and for that to happen you need to have access to a control panel that’s easy to use. Plus, you will also want to plug in automated scripts such as blogs, chat rooms, content management system, etc. on your website. Make sure your web host’s control panel is easy to use and that you are given many automated scripts to use.

These are the basic questions every reliable web host should be able to answer favorably. Also, do not stop after asking these questions – get your technical guy to ask about telnet access, error pages and all that jazzed out jargon, which technical guys yak all the time. Once you’re sure your web host is the cat’s whiskers – go ahead and hire space from him.

Quick Tips on Choosing a Domain Name

Author: natnet

Choosing a new domain name is a very simple task for most experienced internet network marketers but it can be a challenge for someone just starting out in business. Here are a few quick tips that will help to make the process a bit easier.

First, it is virtually impossible to do business on the internet without having at least one domain name. Even if your company provides you with some type of replicated web site, it is normally a good idea to acquire your own domain name and have it redirected to the company issued site.

One of the first questions that normally pops up is whether or not it’s mandatory to get a dot com (.com) domain name. Yes, there are plenty of successful marketers that use domain names that end in other extensions such as .net, .name, .biz, etc. However, dot com continues to dominant the marketplace and most of the experts still recommend that extension whenever possible. Basically, dot com has been branded into our subconscious to such a degree that even when you are clearly given a .net web address, we will instinctively type in dot com.

Next, when you are in the process of selecting a new name, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind.

1. Choose a domain name that contains keywords that apply to whatever it is you are promoting.

2. Make sure that your domain name is easy to read when it is typed or written (stay away from excessive vowels).

3. Long and descriptive domains were once frowned upon but are now more readily accepted.

When you are ready to actually purchase your new domain name, picking the right registrar can be tough because there are literally thousands of them out there on the web. We recommend two that have served us well over the years and for two very different reasons.

GoDaddy.com domain names are one of our favorites because they have a good price and they are fast with redirects. Some companies take many hours, and often days, before your web site is “live” and pointing to another domain name. However, we have purchased new domains and had them repointing to our site of choice in just a matter of minutes with GoDaddy.com. So, if you are looking for speed and a quick redirect, we recommend GoDaddy.com.

Another company that we like and have been using for many years is Dotster.com domain names. Dotster has a very easy to use back office and it is great for anyone that is managing multiple domain names. The system will alert you whenever it’s time to renew a domain name and they also have many other features that you can use to make running your business easier. Ultimately, we like to keep our primary domain names secured through Dotster.com, and any redirect type domains are managed via GoDaddy.

If you are serious about marketing on the internet, learning the basics about buying and redirecting domain names is definitely a skill you will want to learn. Domain names are fairly inexpensive, simple to register, and equally simple to redirect. In the long run, a little creativity in choosing the right domain name can have a major impact on your new network marketing business.

Internet Marketing And How Forums Can Help You Promote Your Website

Author: KristiAmbrose

For those of us with businesses and websites online, we know that marketing and promotion is one of if not THE most essential attribute possible. After all, no promotion means no visitors and no visitors mean no sales! When most of us start out, we don’t even realize the amount of ways to market online, but after several passes and fails, and tons of reading and research, most of us figure out what makes people tick, what gets them interested, and how to get their attention!

Of course there are all kinds of ways to market your business or your website online, but honestly I prefer the forums. Not only is it easy, but it’s quick and you can make some really great friends and some really great business contacts in the process of all of this.

This really is something you should check out if your starting out or if you haven’t ever tried this technique before! Now if you join a forum and it’s not your own, you will want to try to follow the rules as best as you can, obviously if you don’t then you have a chance of getting in trouble, and that completely defeats the purpose of this process! In my opinion, sig links aren’t enough; forums will allow you to place anchor text and links in your signature which can be seen on any post you make, as well as on your profile.

However, what I do find the be helpful, is to find forums that have marketplaces or service sections. These sections will both allow you to place a thread about your business and in most cases will also allow you to provide your service (if you have one to give) to the members of the board. I’ll be honest, at least 90% of all my sales come from three forums in particular and they have done me well!

It’s important to be “polite” on forums because first off it’s not yours, second off you are in the unknown and really your nothing more than a n00b. People often take offense when a newbie comes storming on to a board and thinks they are exempt of all the rules and regulations. This is a good way to get yourself in trouble quickly, so just don’t do it!

When making your thread be sure to include as much info as you can, but don’t overdo it. I know people are usually cut half and half. 50% of the people don’t mind reading posts that go on and on and on. And the other 50% (like me) hate threads that go on and on and on. Be specific but don’t run on. Don’t use “uhms” and “uhhs”. Be professional, be precise, and be informative! The best thing you can do is tell a little bit about yourself first off, then tell them why you are on the forum promoting your site or service.

The second best thing you can do is to make sure you provide some sort of proof that you’re not just some joker off the Internet highway looking to make a quick buck!

Make sure you have a website (as always) to show these people or any other people for that matter. Having a website is like pulling up in a Ferrari and having all the right pieces. Not having a website, is like pulling up in a Ferrari with a ford engine, Chevy wheels, and a horn that sounds like that of a fog horn. If you’re going to play the part you gotta look the part as well! Be sure to reply as soon as possible to threads, replies, questions, and PMs. Even if these questions may seem mundane and tawdry. Just do it.

After all that’s what you’re on this forum for, to interest people and to get then to trust you and like you! After you make your thread and you have things going, be sure to ask your customers (the happy ones) to post some good reviews ON your thread. This will not only bump your thread but it will also make people want to trust you and in turn bring you more work for your service and more visitors to your website which could lead to potential leads or even better yet, potential sales!

Top 5 Software Picks For Building Your Web Site

Author: johnny30006

While the term “content is king” is certainly true for web masters, you need to have ways to deliver that content to your visitors. I’d like to outline my favorite 5, that is what I consider to be “best in class” pieces of software to build your web presence.

First of all, let me set the ground rules. I’m going to assume you have hosting and that hosting provides MySQL databases and PHP. I would also say Java, but none of my top 5 require Java, so I’ll save that discussion for another day. Another thing I’d like to point out is that all of my picks are either freeware or open source, so you won’t need to buy any of these. Let’s get down to business.

The 5th best software for building your web site.
I have a two way tie for my fifth favorite piece of web site software. They are Nucleus for blogs and Mambo for a content management system. If you read further down, both of these were beaten out for higher spots by other software but they deserve honorable mention. These are both excellent pieces of software and of course they are free. Mambo is an open source product and although I don’t see mention of open source in the Nucleus web site, it is a community driven effort under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

The 4th best software for building your web site.
Photo gallery software. Okay, there are a million wallpaper sites on the net, but the one thing most of them have in common is that they are extremely popular. The reason for this is clear, people like pictures, desktop wallpaper and otherwise. I don’t personally run a wallpaper site, but I do use photo gallery software to serve images to my other sites (and for personal family photos). The software I chose in this category is called Coppermine. This software is easy to use and customize. Did I mention that it’s also free!

The 3rd best software for building your web site.
Blogging is very popular on the net right now and there are a ton of places that will let you start your own blog at no cost. Of course the drawback to this is that they usually put their ads on your site. Nothing in this world is truly free, they are making money off your work. Install your own blog software and control your own destiny. My favorite blog software is Serendipity. Of all the top choices listed here, this one is probably the most debatable. Their are other good free choices in this category such as WordPress and Nucleus. After trying a sampling of other software, Serendipity was the easiest to use, place ads on had the most attractive layouts (with the least work). Others will certainly argue this choice, and to this day I have blogs in both Nucleus and Serendipity.

The 2nd best software for building your web site.
Community forums are a great way to boost your web sites content. Get the visitors to do the work of putting relevant content on your site and over time you will have a perpetual content machine. My favorite forum software is phpBB. PhpBB is a high powered, fully scalable, and highly customizable Open Source bulletin board package (quote taken right from their web site). I found phpBB easy to install, stable and you can’t argue with the price, it’s free! There is a very active user community and it’s easy to find add ons and customizations.

And finally, my #1 pick for the best web site software.
Joomla! Joomla is a content management system which has it’s roots in another product, Mambo. I’ve used Joomla on more than a dozen web sites and am very happy with the flexibility it provides, it’s stability and with the use of add ons, it’s search engine optimization capabilities.

The current version (as of this writing) is 1.0.12 with 1.5 in beta. Joomla is an open source product, meaning that it is developed as a community effort and the source code is freely available. It’s easy to find add ons for Joomla such as templates, SEO add ons and more. The install for Joomla (on GoDaddy) was painless for me, simply follow the enclosed instructions. If you haven’t looked at Joomla for your web site yet, I strongly suggest that you take a closer look at it.

Adding A Forum To Your Web Site Is Easy

Author: johnny30006

A forum, or community section, is an easy way to add useful content to your web site with very little effort. First of all, let’s define what a forum is. A forum is a place for users to hold discussions on various topics. It is interactive, in other words users can both read postings and post items themselves. Let me give you a half fictional example of a forum in action.

Forum Thread, Subject UFC in Canada on a Mixed Martial Arts site.
[USER1] Has anyone heard that the UFC might be holding an event in Canada?
[USER2] Yes, I heard that. In fact, I heard that George St Pierre will be on the card and it will be at the Bell Center.
[USER1] Thank you USER2, I can’t wait to get my tickets.
[USER3] Actually, I heard that it’s been canceled and George St Pierre is out with a knee injury.

So, you can see that the web master has gotten some valuable content with no work on his/her part. The users are able to ask questions and respond to them. Once the forum is set up initially and you’ve found a way to get traffic to your forum, it becomes a perpetual content machine, generating useful content for your web site and hopefully in the process some revenue based on some sort of ad or affiliate program, like Google Adsense or ClickBank.

Lets try out one more example Thread, this time from a software forum
[USER1] I’m trying to find a link to the phpBB web site and can’t find it anywhere, does anyone here know what the URL is?
[USER2] You could try doing a Google search on phpBB. It should be near the top of the search results.
[USER1] Thanks, USER2, how about a guide on how to install phpBB?
[USER2] Do a search on “Installing PhpBB On GoDaddy”, or there is also a guide included in the package.
[USER1] Thanks again for the help! Once I get my forum up and running, I’ll post the URL here for you to take a look at.

You can see how the interaction works. It’s not always question and answer, a lot of the time, somebody will post some new information they discovered, or expereinces they’ve had (like on a travel forum).

There are two driving factors which make forums popular. The first is what drives the posters/question answerers, this is either fame or promotion. They either like seeing their name in lights, or they have a link to their web site in their signature (I allow this on my forums as long as they are posting useful information).

The driving force for the people reading the forums is the need for information. Computer forums are extremely popular in this area. People need help finding drivers, installing software, diagnosing problems. People want reviews of products one on one, by other users who don’t have a vested interest in what they end up buying. Forums are an invaluable research tool for these people, and by the way, the ad links on these pages also turn into information sources for the same people.

Adding a forum to your web site is also not expensive or difficult. You have several options in the forum software arena, some of the most popular are vBulletin an excellent choice where licenses go for $150US and my personal favorite phpBB which is a free open source product.

When making the decision of paid vs free software, it’s always important to figure out what kind of user you are (experienced vs novice), how much hand holding you require and of course if the paid version really any better than the open source alternative.

Support can also be an issue to be considered, with some smaller open source projects it can be difficult to find help and/or expertise. I haven’t personally used vBulletin, but I have read several reviews and looked through their support offerings they offer 1 month, 6 months and 12 months of phone support for $60, $180 and $300 respectively. vBulletin also offers professional installation at $135 per license.

Most forum software, including phpBB and vBulletin, require you to have PHP and MySQL available on your host. This isn’t an issue with most web hosts such as godaddy, or hostgator.

If you have a little experience in installations and setup, I would recommend at least giving phpBB a try. Set up a sub directory on your web site, install it and see how it goes. The installation instructions are excellent and if you find yourself installing on GoDaddy, do a search on “Installing PhpBB On GoDaddy”, don’t forget the quotes. If you’re installing on hostgator, or most others the install instructions included with phpBB will do just fine. If you still find yourself having problems, the folks at the phpBB web site (on their forum) are quite helpful.

There are currently two version of phpBB, 2.0.x which is a stable, production ready release, and phpBB 3.0 which is still in the beta stage and is looking good. For now, I would recommend installing 2.x and look to 3.0 in the near future.
