Jimmer Fredette leads NCAA Div I men’s basketball in scoring

January 22, 2011

I was surprised to find that Glen Falls, NY, native Jimmer Fredette is leading NCAA Division I men’s basketball in scoring so far this year. Fredette, a 6’2″ senior guard with the Brigham Young Cougars is a modern day Jerry West at BYU. In fact, Fredette went coo coo for coco puffs against Utah this month scoring 47 points and six assists in a 104-79 win. He was named National Player of the Week by ESPN.com’s Weekly Watch and Dick Vitale. Fredette who is just .3 ppg ahead of UConn’s Kemba Walker in NCAA Div I scoring, was a top 75 national recruit coming out of high school and is known for his scoring prowess. His 47 points against Utah is no fluke, he also scored 49 against Arizona in 2009. A quick look at Fredette’s BYU roster page list’s accomplishments a mile long. He averaged 22.1 ppg in 2009-2010, with 4.7 assists per game and led BYU to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Fredette who’s play seems scripted right out of a Hollywood movie, lists John Stockton as his sports hero and seems well on his way to securing a spot in basketball history.
